The Land of the Thunder Dragon

Bhutan

“If I had to name the biggest difference between Bhutan and the rest of the world, I could do it in one word, civility.” Linda Leaming

Bhutan, “The Land of The Thunder Dragon”, is the last surviving Himalayan kingdom and a country which favors its nation’s Gross Domestic Happiness over Gross Domestic Product.

We’ll take you to Bumthang, a deeply spiritual region deeply rooted in religious legends. Visit Wangdicholing Palace, the former home of Bhutan’s second king, and venture into the Ura valley, an enchanting area of open countryside dotted with forests and tiny villages surrounded by lush pastures. At Ura-la pass, enjoy splendid views of Bhutan’s highest peak, Mt. Gangkhar Puensum.

A drive to Trongsa will take you across the 11’000 foot high Yutong-Pass. An afternoon birding tour will reveal emerald doves and other beautiful bird species. A few days later you’ll make your way to the glacier-carved Phobjika Valley, a stunning wide-open grassland and the winter home of the endangered black-necked crane. You’ll have access to wonderful views of the cranes through high-powered telescopes.

Bhutan is also home to the world’s most spectacular monastery, The Tiger’s Nest – a temple hung 900 meters above the Paro valley overlooking breathtaking scenery. This is not to be missed for hiking enthusiasts. Set-out for a full-day trek, where you’ll be accompanied by dramatic scenery and the melodic murmur of chanting monks.
