Nature & Wildlife in Japan

From Kyushu to Hokkaido Island

For an in-depth experience revolving around Japan’s abundant wildlife and winter landscapes, let us take you on a private tour from Kyushu to Hokkaido Island. You’ll need at least 2 weeks for this, but if you have less time, we’ll find an alternative. This adventure can also be made as active as you’d like it to be Take a look at what awaits you:

Your expedition starts on Kyushu Island, which you’ll fly to from Tokyo. You'll discover Kirishima-Yaku National Park, a natural area known for its active volcanoes, volcanic lakes, and onsen (hot spring in Japanese). You’ll love the walk through the laurel forest around Miike lake. Look forward to overnighting at a hot spring hotel.
A drive southwards to Arasaki Crane Reserve is next on the agenda. Rise at dawn to witness the mass departure of the cranes from the roost.
Take another flight to arrive among the snowy mountains of central Honshu. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed village of Shirakawa-go is definitely worth a visit - located in a mountainous region that was cut off from the rest of the world for a long time and famous for its Gassho-style houses.
Jigokudani is a place like no other. The name means “Hell’s Valley” - due to the steep valley and boiling water bubbling out of small crevices in the frozen ground. You’ll spend the day observing and photographing the Japanese macaques as they soak in those pools.
Next is Japan’s wildest Island, Hokkaido, where more wildlife spectacles await - huge numbers of Japanese cranes, whooper swans, Steller’s sea eagles, deer and red fox. Observe hundreds of cranes and their beautiful greeting ceremonies and courtship dances. You’ll spend your nights at a family-run hot spring hotel.
