Land of a Thousand Hills
Rwanda, Eastern Africa
Rwanda is a great example of a country, that, despite its gloomy past, has risen above and beyond and overcome its stigma of genocide. Through rightly channeling aid money into preserving the best of Rwanda’s natural beauty, the government is not only bringing in tourist dollars, but is doing so in a way which directly benefits surrounding communities.
“Nyungwe stands out among Africa’s intact montane rain forests for its size and diversity” says conservationist Bill Weber.
Nyunge Forest National Park in Rwanda is an example of this positive development. This bountiful natural area is famed mainly for its Chimps, but is also home to the colobus Monkeys (the world’s largest community of them live in the park) and to almost 300 bird species. Along with a naturalist, hike trails to peaks and waterfalls, and meet locals in nearby villages. Reside at a lodge near Parc National des Volcans, to see the magnificent Mountain Gorilla – perhaps one of the most dramatic, thrilling and poignant wildlife experiences possible. The lodge, situated in the foothills of the mighty Virungas, the chain of 15,000 ft volcanoes stretching through Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, affords wonderful views of the volcanoes and the surrounding countryside.
